New Delhi -: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has lodged a complaint with the United Nations, expressing concern over the continued restrictions on the Awami League and the move to exclude the party from the country’s electoral process.
In a communication, Hasina called for immediate international action, arguing that the ban undermines the democratic participation and political rights of a significant section of Bangladesh’s population.
The communication also highlighted how the ban, initially imposed by Bangladesh’s interim administration, has been maintained and formalised by the new government led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman.
The BNP came to power after winning the February 2026 elections, in which the Awami League was not allowed to participate.
Hasina alleged that the elections in Bangladesh were neither free, fair nor inclusive. She also questioned the legitimacy of the election results, arguing that excluding a major political party from the electoral process undermined their credibility.
