Qatar has strongly rejected allegations that it is interfering in Israel’s upcoming elections and providing financial support to influence Arab political parties. Doha has accused certain Israeli leaders of using Qatar’s name to divert public attention from their own domestic political failures.
The controversy has emerged at a time when Israel’s domestic security agency, Shin Bet, has launched an investigation into alleged foreign interference. The issue could also have significant implications for the formation of Israel’s next government.
In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, Majed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, said that Qatar does not interfere in Israel’s elections in any way. He also rejected allegations that Doha was providing financial assistance to influence election results.
Al Ansari claimed that certain Israeli politicians and media organisations associated with them were spreading false information to drag Qatar into Israel’s internal political disputes. He described the allegations as absurd and dangerous, accusing Israeli leaders of using Qatar as a political target for domestic gains.
According to Al Ansari, different political groups in Israel have repeatedly made contradictory accusations against Qatar. In a sarcastic remark, he pointed out that Qatar has been accused at different times of buying the support of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, influencing Israel’s left-wing political groups, and now attempting to influence Arab voters.
He argued that if all these accusations were true, it would appear that Qatar was controlling the entire Israeli political system.
The Qatari spokesperson further said that instead of blaming Doha, Israeli political leaders should focus on the concerns of their voters, the standard of living, and the challenges facing the region.
Meanwhile, Israel’s domestic security agency, Shin Bet, has been assigned the responsibility of investigating allegations of Qatar’s alleged influence over the elections and the possible use of foreign funding. The agency has reportedly been asked to submit its findings within one week.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the controversy as a seismic political issue. He has alleged that foreign actors are attempting to influence the elections in favour of Arab political parties.
Netanyahu has also maintained that Jewish nationalist parties should not cooperate with the Arab political parties Ra’am and the Joint List. However, Qatar has firmly denied any involvement in Israel’s electoral process.
Israel’s National Security Minister and head of the Otzma Yehudit party, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has called for the arrest of Arab political leaders. He said that if there is a legal basis, Shin Bet should take action against Arab party leaders and others suspected of receiving funds linked to Qatar.
The investigation could have serious political consequences, particularly for possible cooperation between Arab political parties and the political bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot. Such developments could further complicate efforts to form a new government in Israel.
President Isaac Herzog is also expected to play an important role in the political process, particularly in decisions concerning government formation.
Qatar, however, has made it clear that these allegations will not affect its regional diplomatic and humanitarian activities.
Al Ansari said that Qatar would continue playing its role as a mediator and maintaining its support for the Palestinian people. He added that any government formed in Israel must respect international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
Qatar has once again reiterated its support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The latest controversy has added another layer of tension to the already complicated political and diplomatic relationship between Israel and Qatar. While Israel investigates the allegations of foreign interference, Doha continues to deny any involvement, insisting that its name is being dragged into Israel’s domestic political battles for political purposes.
