“If you don’t speak up, your clan sinks; if you do, you shame your family.”
“Roared in Bhubaneswar till the throat gave out, but Mohan didn’t listen.”
BHUBANESWAR : Day and night on protest – farmers’ unions take to the streets. While BJP leader Mohan is busy celebrating, farmers suffer on the roads. Farmers say that despite selling over 14 quintals of paddy, the government hasn’t paid them a single rupee. “Mohan’s government took the grain, but not given the payment,” they cry. People remark, “Mohan shows no shame on his face.”
They claim that this is how BJP came to power – deceiving people repeatedly. The so-called “double engine government” made big promises before the election but abandoned the common man once in power. BJP calls itself the people’s government, yet ignores the suffering of those very people.
For 3 to 4 days, farmers from Nabarangpur Farmers’ Union staged a sleepless protest outside Lower PMG in the capital despite scorching heat and rain, demanding their hard-earned money. It’s been over four months, yet they haven’t received payment for the paddy they sold at the mandis.
Before the elections, the Mohan government had promised to increase MSP (Minimum Support Price). But after forming the government, Mohan Majhi claims all promises are fulfilled – a claim contradicted by the dire situation of these poor farmers.
Despite protesting for days, neither the local MLA from Nabarangpur nor the Agriculture Minister visited the farmers. “We are sitting here in extreme weather, but no one cares,” the farmers say.
“This double engine government should feel ashamed,” one protestor declared. “Had this government truly been for the farmers and common people, we wouldn’t have to come to the streets like this.”
Even though they held repeated protests earlier in Nabarangpur, the BJP-led state government ignored them, forcing the farmers to move to Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar. Despite knowing the situation, the government turned a blind eye.
Ironically, Mohan’s government is about to celebrate its first anniversary in a few days. State-wide campaigns will showcase Mohan’s “good governance,” and the government is preparing to share “success report cards” with the public.
But at the same time, the farmers’ protests in the capital have exposed the real face of the BJP government. Now the big question remains – when will the Mohan government fulfill its promises and pay the farmers?
